CRUISING IN SOUTH AMERICA

The thousands of miles of South American coastline are a great draw for cruises to South America.  Natural phenomena, like the gaping fjords of Chile and the distand rugged mountains of Patagonia, a profusion of wildlife (especially the massive penguin rookeries) and  the divergence of cultures and history are all powerful draws to a cruise in South America.

A repositioning cruise combined with an itinerary around Cape Horn (including cruising in Antarctica might be as shown on the following map.

South America

The normal 14 day cruise around the tip of South America would leave Valparaiso, Chile and finish in Buenos Aires, Argentina.  Many other variations are offered by different cruise lines.

The cruising season extends from November to March because of the reverse seasonal weather between North and South America.  Many cruisers take advantage of the repositioning cruises at the beginning and end of the season to experience ports that are not on the usual “around Cape Horn” 14 day itineraries.

If you are cruising from Florida to Chile or Peru, you will also get the chance to travel through the Panama Canal. The itineraries that leave Florida and travel to Brazil usually include Manaus and the Amazon River.  Other itineraries throughout the season include cruising in Antarctica.

Flying to ports, in South America, to begin a cruise is fairly easy.  One other very nice attraction to cruising in South America is that the time zones are fairly similar to those in North America, so you do not have to experience a great deal of adaptation to new time changes.  Weather changes from hot to cold as you travel south, so be sure to take cooler weather clothing for the southern most ports.

Most of the cruise lines offer cruise tours in Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador and Peru.  The scenic wonders of Iguazu Falls and Machu Picchu are well worth a few extra days.  Try to take advantage of these trips while you are in the area.

Culinary delights in each country add to the experience of South America.  Each country has its typical foods that are a combination of European cultures that settled in South America and native Indian tribes.
